Hi,
I have now implemented the Forum Categories we discussed earlier this summer. Please post in what seems like the most appropriate category for your topic. All prior topics remain in the General Discussion category for now. They'll be moved into their own categories over time. I hope this allows our discussions to flow more freely. Let me know if there are any technical problems by posting them here.

An open letter from Alice Russell. June 21, 2011, Brookline, Massachusetts. 1. DO NOT make insulting, mean spirited remarks about anyone or their work; there are a plethora of sites where you can rant unfettered. If you attack someone personally, your comments will be removed. You can post it, but I'm not paying for it. Go elsewhere, and let those artists who are actually interested in discussion and learning have the floor. 2. There will be NO posting of or links to copyrighted material without permission of the copyright owner. That's the law. And if you respect the work of people who make meaningful contributions, you should have no problem following this policy. 3. I appreciate many of the postings from so many of you. Please don't feel you have to spend your time "defending" the LCC to those who come here with the express purpose of disproving it. George worked for decades to disprove it himself; if you know his music, there's no question that it has gravity. And a final word: George was famous for his refusal to lower his standards in all areas of his life, no matter the cost. He twice refused concerts of his music at Lincoln Center Jazz because of their early position on what was authentically jazz. So save any speculation about the level of him as an artist and a man. The quotes on our websites were not written by George; they were written by critics/writers/scholars/fans over many years. Sincerely, Alice

An issue with permissions - not being able to sign in to individual categories without the password - has now been fixed...bobappleton wrote:Hi,

Re: Forum Categories in progress
I've begun to move topics to the categories in which they best seem to fit. This of course means that you won't find all your posts in the General Discussion category any more. When you want to add something to a previous post of yours or follow the current discussion on that topic - and can no longer find it, the simplest solution is to click on View your posts (in the second blue bar at the top of each page - yes, up there ↑ ). For the future I recommend that you adjust your User Control Panel settings (also up there ↑ ) as follows: Go to User Control Panel. Click on Board preferences. Click on Edit posting defaults. Check Notify me upon replies by default. Then assuming you've entered your correct email address in account settings – User control panel/Profile/Edit account settings – you will receive an email with a link to it, when someone posts in a thread you've contributed to or started. Please also explore the other personal settings you can adjust for your own use of the Forum - such as setting your own local time, choosing whether and when to adjust for Summer Time, hiding certain users posts (see Friends & Foes), etc, etc.
I'm also moving posts which were submitted to the wrong topic, and deleting posts or topics which have been marked by their owners as no longer relevant, or break the Forum Rules. Ok, carry on...

Re: Forum Categories in progress
With Alice's permission, we have renamed our Forum categories in order to encourage (younger and probably smarter) people to feel at home – and stop people from feeling apprehensive about posting or asking questions in this rareified atmosphere. These new category names are followed by the old ones in parantheses* so that there's no confusion.
Bob
*parentheses (from the Urban Dictionary): Punctuation that some duh-weebs are starting to include in the spelling of the "words" they define.

At first I wasn't so crazy about this, but now having seen it labeled on screen it really does look fun!!
And everything about music and all art should be fun in some way, even when it's serious
All the best,
m
