Re: Uberbill's questions

Awhile back I was thinking about this. I get what Russell i getting, but I think the five western chords idea maybe isn't the best explanation. I think the best logic to this is that if you take a C lydian scale and add a C# to it, you also get a G lydian scale. So you get to lydian scales that are ...

Re: Chord Function In The LCCOTO?

Great question. You specifically mentioned diatonic chord functions, and I would actually like to talk about non-diatonic chord functions. For me the LCCOTO helps me a lot in understanding compositions whose chords don't fit in the same key. Here's the chords to "Fall" by Wayne Shorter: F#...

The biggest problem I have with the article is when Jeff talks about discrepancies with a 'ladder of fifths.' This is George's greatest argument for the Lydian mode. Jeff doesn't take into account that each note has it's own set of overtones. C has an immediate overtone of G, G has an immediate over...

I once recorded an arrangement of "Summertime" and on it we used the augmented scale for the minor chords at some points. I had never thought of using a C auxiliary augmented scale for an a minor chord.

The scale does have a very dominant sound, so you could call it a Bb Lydian (II) ten tone order scale, because of the presence of the G#.

I think there is one Ives song, called "The Masses." If I remember, I think it has quite a lot of sustaned dissonances made consonant. I don't have the sheet music for it though, so I don't know what exactly he is doing.

You hit it right on when you mentioned the quartal hamonies employed. I had talked a little about quartal harmony in the previous post "Revisions on Previous Posts." There's more possibilities when quartal harmony is employed. In the second example I chose the quartal harmony C F# B E beca...

Harmonic Conditioning

If you have a piano, go up to it and play a middle C and a Db a flat ninth above. Then, play a chord starting on middle C on bass, then add E, A, Db, F# B. The result is that the initial dissonance of the flat nine is hidden within the rest of the harmony. C and Db are distant, but when you add the ...

I feel proud that I have hijacked this thread into quintal harmony. :) Dream Theater is great even though they are very heavy. I think it's good that they are heavier so that they can appeal to a wider audience. At 4:17 it sounds like they are doing a lot of 9-8 suspensions executed in fifths and fo...

My first reply was just a jumble of thoughts not necessarily tied to any one particular part of the original start, except with your discussion of triads and tertian harmony sounding more vague. I think any discussion like this is inevitibly going to lead to Quintal harmony (but I'm very biased). In...

Thanks for reviving this post Strachs because thirdless sound is something I'm very OCD with, like last Winter semester I completely immersed myself in quartal harmony, staying up all night quite of a few times and missing my theory class the next morning to get more sleep or work some more on my ow...

One thing I love about him, out of so many, is his ability play so much using so little. That sounds very cliche! but he goes about it completely different than anybody else who has that same characteristic. You can just tell how sensitive he is to each passing tonality, and how much he is in tune w...
